Angels Win Opener

This year’s varsity basketball team might come in a little undersized against most teams but they certainly are not lacking in heart, with a never give up attitude. With only three practices before the regular season, LFA travelled to Notre Dame to kick off their regular season against the Jugglers.
After missing last season due to injury, the Angels welcomed back Alexis Fong ’19 and a new student to LFA Elise Lim Dickens ’21. The additions will contribute to a deeper team this year, which will bode well for the season. The Angels started slow, not being in “game shape”. The Jugglers were sharper, taking advantage of defensive gaps in the lanes and getting themselves to the foul line, where they shot well. Despite working the rust out of their shooting, LFA kept it close. Though the Jugglers led by 5 with 30 seconds left in the half, Ashley Velasco ’19 hit both her free throws to close the gap. The defense led by tireless Ceili Mc Cabe’19, Maya Landero Van ’20, and Allison Kuzyk ’20 (who soldiered on after receiving a viscous elbow to the face). Ashley Velasco ’19 stepped up, showing off impressive vertical, to out-rebounded Notre Dame regularly. It was one of these crucial rebounds that got the ball to Alexis, who hit a three with 5 seconds left in the half to tie the game going into the break.Throughout the game, but especially in the second half, Sharon Luk ’19, Ava MacFarlane ’20, Isabel Jalandoon ’19 and Elise really used their athleticism, allowing them to win most of the loose-ball battles. It really turned the turn the tide in LFA's favour. The Angels built up a 14 point lead and closed out the game with an 81-76 win. It was a nice win and a total team effort, but the Angels know there’s more work in practice on both ends of the court. The Angels will have a quick turn-around to as they face cross street rival York House Tuesday night.
