First Home Game Give Lots of Thrills

Coach Allan
The first home game of the year for the Junior Angels basketball team saw them host Centennial.
Once again the Angels had to play without Hanna Garcia '21. The first home game saw everyone else on the roster able to play at least a few minutes. Lauren Accili '21 gamely played about 7 minutes and while her shins seemed ok the extended layoff took its' toll on her fitness, but not before she hit a nice outside shot.

The team got out to an early 10-4 lead in the first quarter and should have led wire to wire, but some sloppy passing and panicking led to numerous turnovers which allowed Centennial to stay in the game and actually take a 1 point lead in the 4th quarter. Fortunately the Angels would only allow one basket in the fourth quarter and re-took the lead and won by 2. Notable down the stretch was Alexis Mezzarobba '21 who added to her team leading steal total with a couple of steals, a field goal and a couple of clutch free throws. Alexis has shown strong play all season and her versatility in both the front court and back court is especially important with Hannah out for a couple of weeks.

Carmen Accili '21 showed grit and toughness after getting elbowed in the mouth and refused to come out of the game. Both Mikayla Stelling '21 and Natalie Hui '21 showed their evolving skills by attacking the basket from a long distance and finishing strong with layups.

Despite the victory this game showed some areas of needed improvement. Hopefully it will be quick as tomorrow the Angels host a good Point Grey team that has lots of height.
