Angels Book Place In BC Catholics Championship

Parent contributor
Our Senior Basketballl Angels continue to impress this year with a superb effort to claim their place in this year's BC Catholics Championship game. The unheralded Angels played the STM Knights, who are currently ranked provincially #3 in AA Basketball. It was the Angels most challenging test of the season, playing against a STM team comprising of almost all club players. For most of LFA’s players, while they're great athletes, basketball is not their primary sport.
The Angels got off to a good start as they were able to break STM’s press and were up 13-10. STM tried to use their height advantage, working the ball inside the post. However, the Angels defense--led by Ashley Velasco ’19 amazing vertical elevation--blocked many shot attempts. Meanwhile, Alexis Fong ’19's positional play led to LFA’s transition offence. Alexis also found her scoring touch from beyond the arc, hitting three timely threes which opened up the scoring lanes for the tandem Ceili Mc cabe ’19 and Maya Landero van ’20.

The Angels led at half time, which was all the more extraordinary given one of our key players was sitting the game out due to concussion protocol. In the third quarter, the Angels ran into foul trouble. The Knights mounted a comeback and briefly took the lead 39-37... just before Alexis hit her fourth three, just before the end of the quarter to regain the lead.

In the final quarter, the tension in the air was acute and the crowd was getting boisterous wanting to see more threes. The players from both teams responded with exciting back and forth action. Alison Kuzyk ’20 made some key blocks and Alexis hit two more threes and the Angels clawed their way to a nine point advantage in the final couple of minutes. The Knights are every bit worthy of their #3 ranking, and went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to 4, but ran out of time.

The tired Angles clearly playing on adrenaline held on to close out a 54-50 win. Like Ceili’s shooting performance yesterday (earning her player of the game honors), Alexis’s 6 threes earned her today’s player of the game. In the eight team tournament, Ceili currently leads all players in scoring with Maya second and Alexis fourth. The Angels will face provincial AA #1 ranked STA in the finals on Saturday night at 6:30.
