LFA students shine in International Public Speaking competition
This October, four LFA students represented the school at an International Independent Public Speaking competition held in Portland, Maine.
A team of four students from LFA recently participated in a four day International Independent Public Speaking competition held at Waynflete School in Portland, Maine. The IISPSC has been hosted internationally since 1982 with LFA co-hosting with Crofton House in 2023. Nicole Liu '26, Brianna Lam '27, Cate Shumka '27, and Krupa Pramod '28 competed with students from thirty eight other schools with team LFA placing fourth in Canada and ninth overall in the world. Our students enjoyed meeting other students from all over North America as well as places such as Korea, India, Bermuda and Hong Kong. Students competed in two rounds of several different speech and debate events. Our Waynflete hosts reported that “everyone was inspired by the students’ poise, rhetoric and kindness as well as their ability to tackle difficult issues with nuance and respect for their opponents.”
In addition to long hours of competition our hosts took everyone on a ferry tour of Casco Bay. Our LFA students also truly enjoyed visiting the Portland Lobster Company and sampling lobster rolls in the old port section of Portland as well as touring Victoria Mansion, a historic house museum.
